Our expert panel will discuss coping with environmental grief and anxiety, communicating ‘Earth Optimism’, and highlighting actions that will make a difference, from personal choices to the voting booth. Join us for insightful presentations and an inspiring Q&A that may just leave you feeling a bit more optimistic about the future.

Climate Change in History & Law from The Enlightenment to the Courthouse

Tuesday, October 23, 2018, 7:00 – 8:30 pm

Naked City Brewery & Tap House, 8564 Greenwood Ave N, Seattle, WA

What is the history of climate change? Who discovered the planet was warming, when, and under what circumstances?

While the industrial revolution is often invoked as the start of our climate change woes, environmental historians trace it back to the Enlightenment. The next riveting installment of Climate Science on Tap covers the history of the climate change issue and how law and policy are increasingly important for mitigating and adapting in a warming world. In particular, our panelists will discuss the groundbreaking legal challenge of Juliana v. U.S. and other cases moving through the courts, as well as efforts in the Washington State legislature. How can law, policy, and the court system be used to respond to this existential threat?

Climate change not only has a complex history, but it also has a court date, and one which may well open the next pivotal chapter in the story of our climate.  Join us for Climate Science on Tap to learn more! Tickets strongly encouraged!  See note below.

Featuring:
– OR Attorney Sean Munger, JD, PhD, History
– UW Scientist LuAnne Thompson, PhD, Oceanography, Physics, & Atmospheric Sciences*
– WA State Rep Joe Fitzgibbon, Chair of House Environment Committee

Where:  Lagunitas Brewing, 1550 NW 49th, Seattle, WA

Puget Sound is known for iconic scenery and wildlife. Recently WA Governor Jay Inslee signed an executive order outlining a strategy for southern resident orca whale and Chinook salmon recovery. But how is climate change impacting these animals? And how is the rest of the food web affected? This Climate Science on Tap examines how the food web of Puget Sound and the wider Salish Sea is being altered by a changing climate, from microscopic plankton to massive orcas and everything in-between.

The three scientists weigh in with fascinating presentations followed by an engaging discussion of the climate change impacts to salmon, whales, and the broader food web, as well as what we might expect in the future. The panelists include Christopher Krembs, Marine Biologist, with the WA Dept of Ecology; Iris Kemp, Ecologist for Long Live the Kings; and Lynne Barre, National Oceanographic, and Atmospheric Association. The event will be moderated by P. Sean McDonald with the University of Washington’s Program on the Environment and researcher with the School of Aquatic and Marine Science.
